Thomas Kapsalis, Untitled Rectangle, 1979. Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 inches. Corbett vs. Dempsey.
A youthful nonagenerian, Thomas H. Kapsalis is one of the great figures in Chicago painting, an unreconstructed modernist and a ferociously original abstract painter who taught at the School of the Art Institute for over 50 years. This exhibition concentrates on a body of work he started to make during the Vietnam War, when, as an act of protest, he eliminated color from the canvases.
