Founders Pop-Up

Various locations

The Founders pop-up pictured in Garfield Park on July 31, 2019.

In partnership with the Chicago Transit Authority and the Chicago Park District, Floating Museum is transforming the Green Line into a moving cultural destination, activating several public spaces to emphasize key themes and historic moments that have defined Chicago’s creative past.

The Founders pop-up exhibition features an inflatable sculpture with four busts facing the four cardinal directions. Among them are Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, Chicago’s first non-indigenous settler; Kitihawa, a Potawatomi woman and du Sable’s wife; Harold Washington, the first African American mayor of Chicago; and the face of a young boy as designed by African American sculptor William Artis (1914–1977). Founders also interprets local art historical collections from the DuSable Museum of African American History and the Field Museum; for example, Potawatomi textiles from the Field Museum inspired the sculpture’s geometric pattern.

Altogether, Founders highlights the impact of indigenous people and people of color on Chicago’s cultural legacy, honoring the often-overlooked roles of marginalized people and their communities in shaping our world from the past to present moment.
