The Newberry Library will host a series of three public programs uncovering key stories related to the history of art and design in Chicago. The programs will draw from the library’s vast collections in order to focus on archival materials that provide an exceptional expression of what was innovative in Chicago, with special emphasis on the city’s pioneering role in American design. The Newberry programs will feature topics such as the history of the American postcard, the proliferation of clubs and small arts organizations from 1890–1920, and lastly, the aesthetics and technologies behind typography and book design industries that have historically been based in Chicago.
