September promises to be the busiest month yet with dozens of exhibitions and even more events from which to choose. Need a little help deciding what to see and do this month? Fifteen Exhibitions Opening
Yes, you read that right. Fifteen new exhibitions open in September at cultural institutions across the city and beyond exploring topics such as Chicago photography, Imagist art, South Side creativity, and mid-century advertising. There’s truly something for everyone.
- September 11: Wish You Were Here: Postcards and Visual Culture
What does it mean to communicate through images? Explore the Newberry Library’s historic collection of postcards, all designed and printed right here in Chicagoland.
- September 15: Celebrating South Side Stories
Celebrate the historic and ongoing role art and design play on Chicago’s South Side. Activities include all-ages artmaking workshops, live performances, film screenings, and more.
- September 27–30: EXPO CHICAGO
Last year we stumped you with our #JustGoSeeIt art hunt and this year we’ll be back with another creative installation. Be sure to stop by our booth!
- September 29: Creative Chicago: An Interview Marathon
The first US-based marathon by international curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, this five-hour interview series takes a multi-dimensional, multi-disciplinary look at creativity in the city—past, present, and future. Interview subjects include Theaster Gates, Stanley Tigerman, Amanda Williams, and many more.
- September 29: Art on theMART Launch Event
A first-of-its-kind canvas for digital art, Art on theMART launches with four contemporary artworks, two taking direct inspiration from the city’s art and design history. Projecting across more than 2.5 acres of theMART’s exterior river-facing façade, this ambitious new ongoing installation honors and innovates Chicago’s public art tradition.
